Murugan Temple, Eellakkanthan Thirukkovil

During the war between Lord Murugan and Soorapadman, Goddess Parvati presented the Vel to Lord Murugan as an embodiment of her shakti in order to vanquish the evil asura Soorapadman. Lord Murugan used His Vel to defeat the evil forces of Soorapadman. The Vel, as a symbol of Murugan’s divinity, is an object of worship in the temples of Murugan. Battle cry “Vetrivel, Veeravel” is commonly used among Tamil warriors. Thaipusam festival celebrates the occasion of Lord Murugan receiving the vel from his mother. http://www.scoresonthedoors.org.uk/business/eellakanthan-temple–759249.html http://www.eellakanthan.org
