Even as a child was Srila Prabhupada by Krishna thrilled and honored small altar figures. As a young adult, he attended Scottish Church College and was a follower of Gandhi. In 1922 he met Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura (photo right), whose observations of the concern of the ancient Vedic culture of India so impressed him that he was his student.

Srila Prabhupada worked for many years as a distributor of pharmaceutical products and had a family. In 1959 he took the sannyasa-vow (sannyasi = monk) and he devoted himself intensively to the study of the Vedic scriptures. He began work on his life’s work – a multi-volume, annotated translation of the eighteen thousand verse Srimad Bhagavatam comprehensive.

After a long preparation period, he finally came to pass in 1965, at the age of 69 years, on a trip to New York. In only 12 years, he built an international movement with over 100 temples all over the world. During this time, Srila Prabhupada circled the Earth 14 times to meet the countless invitations from all over the world.

His work

Despite his many travels he saw his main task still is to translate texts of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, the most important, such as the Bhagavad Gita, as well as the Shri Chaitanya-charitamrita and comment. He also gave lectures around the world, gave interviews and met with important representatives from politics, science and leaders of many other religions.

Srila Prabhupada published:

  1. annotated translations of important works of the Gaudiya Vaishnavism-
  2. Summaries of these works
  3. Compilations of speeches, letters, and conversations on specific topics

The most important and comprehensive works fall into the first category:

  • Srimad Bhagavatam
  • Shri Chaitanya-charitamrita (Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s biography)
  • Bhagavad Gita – as it is (a philosophical conversation between God, Krishna, and his friend, Arjuna – also known as the Bible of India)

In the second category, for books like “The teachings of Sri Chaitanya” and “Krishna – the Supreme Personality of Godhead,” in the third drop works like “The beauty of the self” and “Perfect Questions, Perfect Answers”.

A complete library of all Srila Prabhupada’s works can be found in our temple, and many of these books you can borrow, or buy. Of course there are the complete works now also available (in English) in digital form, and eBook versions of many German titles are.
