AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, Srila Prabhupada briefly (1896-1977, left), is one of the most important exponents of Gaudiya Vaishnavism-the last century and in 1966 the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (also known as the Hare Krishna movement known). Even as a child was Srila Prabhupada by Krishna thrilled and honored small altar figures. As a young adult, he attended Scottish Church College and was a follower of Gandhi. In 1922 he met Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura (photo right), whose observations of the concern of the ancient Vedic culture of India so impressed him that he was his student.
Srila Prabhupada worked for many years as a distributor of pharmaceutical products and had a family. In 1959 he took the sannyasa-vow (sannyasi = monk) and he devoted himself intensively to the study of the Vedic scriptures. He began work on his life’s work – a multi-volume, annotated translation of the eighteen thousand verse Srimad Bhagavatam comprehensive.
After a long preparation period, he finally came to pass in 1965, at the age of 69 years, on a trip to New York. In only 12 years, he built an international movement with over 100 temples all over the world. During this time, Srila Prabhupada circled the Earth 14 times to meet the countless invitations from all over the world.
Despite his many travels he saw his main task still is to translate texts of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, the most important, such as the Bhagavad Gita, as well as the Shri Chaitanya-charitamrita and comment. He also gave lectures around the world, gave interviews and met with important representatives from politics, science and leaders of many other religions.

The most important and comprehensive works fall into the first category:
- Srimad Bhagavatam
- Shri Chaitanya-charitamrita (Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s biography)
- Bhagavad Gita – as it is (a philosophical conversation between God, Krishna, and his friend, Arjuna – also known as the Bible of India)
In the second category, for books like “The teachings of Sri Chaitanya” and “Krishna – the Supreme Personality of Godhead,” in the third drop works like “The beauty of the self” and “Perfect Questions, Perfect Answers”.
