Pura Luhur Ulu Watu Bali
Uluwatu Temple (Pura Luhur Uluwatu) is one of Bali’s nine key temples (the Kayangan Jagat – Bali directional temples), located on the southern tip of Bali in Badung Regency. The Uluwatu temple guards Bali from evil spirits from the SW, in which dwell major deities.For Uluwatu it’s Bhatara Rudra, God of the elements and of cosmic force majeure. One of Bali’s spectacular temples located high on a cliff top almost directly on the edge of a plateau 250 feet above the Indian Ocean. Dedicated to the spirits of the sea, the famous Pura Luhur Uluwatu temple is an architectural wonder in black coral rock, beautifully designed with very spectacular views.Pura Luhur Uluwatu is famous for its unique position. The Bali Temple is also claimed to be one of the oldest temples in Bali, Pura Luhur Uluwatu. Most of Bali’s regencies have Pura Luhur which become the focus for massive pilgrimages during three or five day odalan anniversaries. The photogenic Tanah Lot and the Bat Cave temple, Goa Lawah, is also Pura Luhur. All Pura Luhur have inspiring locations, overlooking large bodies of water.This is a popular place to enjoy the sunset. The views from Pura Luhur Uluwatu Temple are best enjoyed on two different vantage points on both northern and southern portions of the area. Everyday at sunset, The Kecak dance performance is held here at the Pura Luhur Uluwatu Temple(watch the photo-slides). Pura Luhur Uluwatu Temple is inhabited by large number of monkeys (precautionary signs have been put at a few places), who are extremely adept at snatching your belonging, including bags, cameras and eyeglasses. Keep a very close grip on all your belongings including eyeglasses if possible. If you do have something taken, you can usually “make a deal” with the monkeys and exchange some fruit for your belongings. If you offer some locals or even the Pura Luhur Uluwatu Temple priests a tip they will be happy to do keep the monkeys away from you.Pura Luhur Uluwatu Temple is a popular place to enjoy the sunset – but careful of the “aggressive” monkeys.
About 45 minutes from Nusa Dua, or 1 hr 15 minutes from Kuta or Tuban area. From Nusa Dua, the hilly road will pass through Pecatu, (in)famous for its uncompleted monument and luxury homes.
